The State Theatre

Enriching the lives of over 40,000 children and adults each year, the State Theatre's nationally-recognized education programs help make the arts accessible, enjoyable, and relevant to people throughout our community. The company's student matinees, professional development workshops for teachers, artist residencies, outreach activities, pre-performance lectures, and innovative Scientists Exploring the Arts program offer a wealth of educational opportunities not only for schools, but for people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.

George Street Playhouse

The George Street Playhouse Education Department provides over 80,000 students of all ages with the means to explore the world around them through the dramatic process; to focus on the process of creative expression; to enhance communication and creative problem solving skills; to build self -esteem; and to generate an appreciation of theatre arts as a vital force in their lives, laying the foundation for a life-long appreciation of the arts.

Education Touring Theater & Student Matinees
The nationally recognized Touring Theater Company produces first-class theater followed by post play workshops for young audiences concerning themes such as tolerance, conflict resolution, respect, peace, substance abuse, self worth, and justice. Currently the Touring Theater Company has five plays in their repertory: Peacemaker, New Kid, In Between, Tomato Plant Girl, and Wasted. The GSP Touring Theater also produces a week of student matinees at the theater.

Theater Classes and In School Workshops/Residencies
Theater Classes

GSP’s Theater Classes for children and adults focus on the process of creative self-expression while enhancing communication and problem-solving skills, building self-esteem and laying the foundation for a life long appreciation for the arts. Classes end with the opportunity for students to display the sills they have learned with family and friends.

Workshops and Residencies
In-school residencies and workshops with George Street Playhouse teaching artists provide the opportunity for K-12 students and teachers to work closely with skilled theater artists. These programs assist schools in expanding arts programming and/or address New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Customized program topics may include but are not limited to: Arts integrated with History, Math, Science, Creative Drama, Literacy (improving reading and writing skills), Introduction to Acting, Creative Movement, Play Making, Folk Tales or Fairy Tales.

Divas/Gentle Men Projects
The Divas and Gentlemen Project places performing artists in the classroom, who then lead students through a series of exercises (such as journal writing, improvisation, storytelling and playwriting) drawing personal experiences from the young women and men. At the conclusion of the nine-day residency, each participant “graduates” from the program having written a theatrical monologue based upon his or her own personal experiences. A culminating event showcase is produced where participants are invited to present their work before an audience.

Community Programs
Post Play Discussions

After each preview performance of the season, George Street Playhouse conducts a discussion between the audience and the show’s artistic team where the audience can learn more about the creation of the production as well as give feedback.

Sunday Symposiums
Following the third Sunday matinee of each show, the George Street Playhouse presents a panel discussion that examines the issues raised on stage in depth. Panelists range from playwrights, to community professionals, to the artists that create the roles. The Symposiums are free to all subscribers.

George Street Playhouse Internships and Apprenticeships
The George Street Playhouse Internship & Apprenticeship Programs offer practical experience to bridge the gap between academia and the world of professional theatre. Interns and Apprentices undertake responsibilities as members of the staff, contribute ideas, participate in department and staff meetings, and complete projects under the guidance of their supervisors.

The GSP Apprentice Program should be regarded as a full-time commitment of at least 40 hours per week throughout our full season (September through May). Apprentices will receive a weekly stipend and a housing allowance.

Time commitments for GSP’s Internship program are dependant upon the specific department. Internships are unpaid, however GSP will sponsor interns to receive academic credit upon the discretion of the intern’s college or university.
