| Info/Notes: | THE ART OF MUSIC/Follow the Drinking Gourd: Music of the African-American ExperienceDate: February 07, 2010 Diane Goldsmith, piano; Ivan Woods, bass; Shannon Hunt, soprano. So much music of our time is based on traditional African American forms, such as the spiritual, blues, ragtime and jazz. In this intriguing program for voices and piano, Follow the Drinking Gourd – a group named for the slave song used to guide runaways to freedom on the Underground Railroad - will sample the musical richness of African-American culture. The group consists of soprano Shannon Hunt, who has appeared in opera and musicals in New York and beyond; bass Ivan Woods, a member of the Philadelphia Singers Chorale, the resident chorus of the Philadelphia Orchestra; and pianist Diane Goldsmith, who has performed extensively as a soloist and with ensembles. |
