Program: Britten, Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes; Tüür, Symphony No. 4, “Magma” (U.S. Premiere); Elgar, Enigma Variations.

Written specifically for Evelyn Glennie, who The New York Times applauds as an artist with “immense musical gifts” and “scintillating presence,” Tüür’s powerful and fluid “Magma” will blow you away with its massive variety of percussion instruments including bongos, congas and even cowbells! Then, Elgar hints at a major underlying theme but never expressly reveals it—it’s a musical puzzle. Some think the theme is based on a popular tune, but one thing is certain—Elgar dedicated this piece to his “friends pictured within,” each variation being an affectionate portrayal of one of his close acquaintances.
