Celebrate the fine arts and early spring with our trip to the Barnes Foundation, in Merion, PA. Featuring one of the world’s largest collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, this residence and its 12-acre arboretum are home to an extraordinary number of masterpieces by artists such as Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, and Auguste Renoir. Established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to “promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts,” the collection also includes important examples of American paintings and works on paper; African sculpture; Native American ceramics, jewelry, and textiles; paintings by Old Masters; and more. The lovely arboretum, which surrounds the Foundation’s Gallery, features an exceptional collection of rare and unusual trees, rose and perennial gardens, lilac groves and mature trees not typically grown in the Mid-Atlantic region.
