| Info/Notes: | SYMPOSIUM/Lalla Essaydi: Les Femmes du MarocDate: March 03, 2010 A Mellon Program Lalla Essaydi is one of several contemporary Islamic women artists whose work has garnered increasing acclaim in Europe, America, and the Middle East. Born in Morocco into a conservative Muslim family and educated in Europe and the United States, the artist is poised at the intersection of several cultures. While her photographs are both beautiful and compelling works of contemporary art, they also make complicated references to the history and legacy of Orientalism and the ways in which religion and gender construct identities. This interdisciplinary symposium of speakers drawn from the highly esteemed faculty of the Rutgers community will address some of the issues that the photographs raise from a variety of perspectives. Following the presentation of papers, a panel discussion with questions posed by the audience will be moderated by Donna Gustafson, Liaison for the Mellon Program and Assistant Curator of American Art. |

| Info/Notes: | THE ART OF DANCE/Dance Within the Art: Meagan A. WoodsDate: March 03, 2010 Join acclaimed dancer Meagan A. Woods and her ensemble of dancers and musicians for an unforgettable evening that fuses the visual arts with the art of dance. Taking place simultaneously in three different galleries of the museum, Woods and ensemble will “dance” with the artworks, embodying the forms and rhythms of paintings and sculptures. In addition, Mumta Hathiramani, a visual artist, will sketch Woods’s motions without knowing from what artwork they derive. Her art will interpret Woods’s danced response of the original piece. At the end of the evening, the visual piece by Hathiramani will be aligned with the work embodied by Woods to see how movement has connected them. The evening will also include a performance in Herbert Ferber’s installation, Sculpture to Create an Environment, with its snaking black sculptures that enter and exit the walls. Meagan A. Woods is a member of University Danceworks, the touring student dance company of the Mason Gross School of the Arts. This program is offered in conjunction with the Zimmerli’s First Wednesdays: Art After Hours series. |

| Info/Notes: | Calvin Bergera new musical by Barry Wyner GSP is thrilled to produce this hilarious new musical with book, music and lyrics by Barry Wyner. Too insecure to ask out the girl of his dreams, Calvin communicates with her through the handsome new kid in school. The result is a hip, heartfelt musical comedy re-telling of the Cyrano de Bergerac story, reset in a current-day American high school. Appropriate for ages 12 and up, this new musical, winner of the 2007 Richard Rodgers Award, is sure to delight anyone who has ever been an insecure teenager in love. “In the tradition of premiering exciting new musicals for the American theatre, like The Spitfire Grill and last year’s The Toxic Avenger, Calvin Berger is certain to join their ranks as another new musical to be produced around the country.” said Artistic Director David Saint Calvin Berger begins 2010 at George Street Playhouse, running February 9 – March 14, 2010. Opening night is set for Friday, February 19. Select weeknight performances will have an earlier 7 pm curtain time (as opposed to 8 pm) to accommodate families with middle school and high school-aged students. |
